One area of expenses in the current economy that people look at cutting is energy costs. The “Kill A Watt EZ” by P3 International is a device that helps households and business do just that. The Kill A Watt is an energy usage monitor that plugs into a household power outlet, and has a power outlet of its own that the user then plugs different appliances into. With the Kill A Watt now situated between the owners appliance and the power system of the house, it can now monitor how much energy the appliance is using.
Find your energy hogs
The LCD display on the device shows the appliance’s energy consumption by the kilowatt hour, the same unit that power utilities measure energy usage. The device also can be programmed with the kilowatt hour rate of the local power utility and display actual dollar and cent cost. By rotating the unit between different household devices, users can identify appliances that are energy hogs or ones that use energy even when set to “off.”
Easy energy monitoring and saving
The device is easy to use. After being plugged in, 4 buttons on the front are used to cycle through different options and display modes. Users should then take a look at their latest power bill to find their rate per kilowatt hour. Once the device is in the “rate” mode, the desired rate can be set anywhere between $0.000 and $9.999 per kilowatt hour. Users can cycle between different time periods to calculate energy cost of the appliance per hour, day, week, month or year.
One thing that potential users should be aware of is that despite its name, the “Kill A Watt” doesn’t actually do anything to make a device use less energy. It is simply a usage monitor. Its only purpose is to help users identify devices to remove or replace in order to save energy. It definitely provides insight about what different energy behaviors might cost a person, for example leaving a lamp on or leaving a laptop charger plugged in even with no laptop attached. By being more aware of these habits, the Kill A Watt EZ could make users change their energy usage, and wind up saving energy and money. To learn more or purchase a Kill A Watt EZ click here.
